We love Tanzania coffee beans. They are fabulous in many ways. Due to limited supply recently, we just have the one single origin Tanzanian coffee bean option below. We hope that will change soon, so that we'll have other coffees from Tanzania to offer you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Tanzanian coffee taste like?

Tanzanian coffee is generally bright, sweet and well balanced, with a clean and lively flavour profile. Depending on the region and seasonal lot, tasting notes may include berries, citrus, stone fruit, dark chocolate, caramel and gentle wine-like characteristics.

How does Tanzanian coffee compare with Kenyan coffee?

Tanzanian coffee can share some of the brightness, fruit and acidity associated with Kenyan coffee, but it is often softer and more approachable. Kenyan coffee may deliver greater intensity and blackcurrant character, while Tanzanian coffee can offer a smoother balance of fruit, sweetness and body.

Is Tanzanian coffee suitable for espresso?

Yes. Tanzanian coffee can produce a vibrant and expressive single-origin espresso with concentrated sweetness, fruit and chocolate flavours. It is well suited to drinkers who enjoy a brighter espresso rather than a heavy, low-acidity style.

Is Tanzanian coffee good for filter brewing?

Yes. Pour-over, batch brew and AeroPress are excellent choices for Tanzanian coffee because they can highlight its clarity, sweetness and finer fruit characteristics. These methods are particularly suitable for customers who prefer to drink coffee black.

Why do you currently offer only one Tanzanian coffee?

The supply of premium Tanzanian coffee into Australia can be limited and inconsistent. We only purchase lots that meet our quality standards, so the range may sometimes be restricted to one carefully selected coffee until another suitable lot becomes available.

Discover the Bright, Balanced Character of Tanzanian Coffee

Tanzanian coffee has developed into a premium origin with its own distinctive identity. Although it is often compared with neighbouring Kenya, quality Tanzanian coffee can deliver an impressive combination of brightness, sweetness, body and flavour clarity.

Depending on the region, altitude, variety and processing method, Tanzanian coffee beans may display notes of berries, citrus, stone fruit, dark chocolate, caramel and gentle wine-like complexity. Some lots are vibrant and fruit-driven, while others offer a smoother and more rounded cup.

At myCuppa, we have sourced premium Tanzanian coffee for more than 15 years. We have also achieved strong results with Tanzanian coffees in past competitions, reinforcing our confidence in the quality and potential of this origin.

Why Tanzanian Coffee Deserves More Recognition

Tanzania has long produced coffee, but its highest-quality lots have not always received the same attention as coffees from Kenya or Ethiopia.

That has changed as producers, washing stations and exporters have placed greater emphasis on selective harvesting, careful processing, lot separation and improved quality control.

These improvements have helped reveal the natural sweetness, fruit character and clarity available in better Tanzanian coffees.

Today, Tanzania should be viewed as a standalone specialty coffee origin rather than simply as an alternative to Kenya. Its best coffees offer enough distinction, complexity and balance to compete strongly with other premium African origins.

What Does Tanzanian Coffee Taste Like?

Tanzanian coffee is generally bright, clean and naturally sweet.

Common flavour notes may include citrus, berries, stone fruit, caramel, dark chocolate and subtle florals. Some lots can also display wine-like acidity or a gentle savoury complexity.

The acidity is often lively but less intense than many premium Kenyan coffees. This can make Tanzanian coffee feel more approachable while still providing a clearly defined African flavour profile.

Body commonly ranges from medium to full, depending on the lot, roast and brewing method.

Tanzanian Coffee Compared with Kenyan Coffee

Tanzanian and Kenyan coffees can share several characteristics because the two countries have neighbouring growing regions and similar high-altitude conditions.

Both origins may produce dense beans with bright acidity, fruit sweetness and strong flavour clarity. However, Kenyan coffee is often more intense, with pronounced blackcurrant, citrus and wine-like characteristics.

Tanzanian coffee can be softer, rounder and easier to approach. It may combine berry and citrus notes with caramel, chocolate and a smoother body.

These are broad comparisons, as individual farms and seasonal lots can vary significantly.

Where Is Coffee Grown in Tanzania?

Coffee is grown across several elevated regions of Tanzania.

The northern regions around Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru are among the best known. These areas can produce bright, clean coffees with citrus, fruit and floral characteristics.

Coffee is also grown in southern regions, including Mbeya and surrounding highlands. These coffees may offer greater body, sweetness and chocolate character while still retaining good acidity and clarity.

Regional names provide useful context, but the farm, altitude, variety and processing method remain essential when assessing the flavour of an individual lot.

Is Tanzanian Coffee Good for Espresso?

Tanzanian coffee can produce an excellent single-origin espresso.

Its natural sweetness and lively acidity become concentrated during extraction, potentially revealing berry, citrus, stone-fruit, caramel and dark chocolate flavours.

It is especially suitable for customers who enjoy a brighter and more expressive espresso rather than a very heavy or low-acidity style.

Correct grinder adjustment is important. Under-extraction may make the coffee taste sharp or thin, while excessive extraction can reduce sweetness and introduce bitterness or dryness.

Tanzanian Coffee with Milk

Tanzanian coffee can work well in flat whites, cappuccinos and smaller lattes.

Milk softens the acidity and can bring forward caramel, chocolate and berry sweetness. The result is often brighter and more distinctive than milk coffee prepared with Brazilian or Indian beans.

Smaller drinks such as piccolos and flat whites generally preserve more of the coffee’s fruit and complexity. Larger milk drinks may soften some of the finer characteristics.

Customers who prefer a rich but lively milk coffee may find Tanzania particularly appealing.

Is Tanzanian Coffee Good for Filter Brewing?

Tanzanian coffee is very well suited to filter brewing.

Pour-over, batch brew and AeroPress methods can highlight its clarity, sweetness and detailed fruit character. Citrus, berries, stone fruit and florals are often most noticeable when the coffee is brewed cleanly and consumed black.

A medium grind is a useful starting point for many filter methods. Adjust the grind and brew time according to taste.

If the coffee tastes weak or overly sharp, try a finer grind or slightly longer extraction. If it tastes bitter, dry or heavy, use a coarser grind or reduce the brew time.

Tanzanian Peaberry Coffee

Tanzania is well known for peaberry coffee, although not every Tanzanian lot is a peaberry.

Most coffee cherries contain two flat-sided seeds. A peaberry develops when only one rounded seed forms inside the cherry.

Peaberries are separated by size and shape during grading. They can roast differently because of their rounded form and may produce a concentrated or lively cup.

However, peaberry classification does not automatically guarantee better flavour. The farm, altitude, harvest quality, processing and roasting remain more important than bean shape alone.

Best Brewing Methods for Tanzanian Coffee

Tanzanian coffee can be prepared using espresso machines, pour-over brewers, batch brew, AeroPress, plunger and automatic coffee machines.

Filter methods usually emphasise fruit, acidity and clarity. Espresso creates a more concentrated cup with stronger sweetness, body and chocolate characteristics.

AeroPress can provide a useful balance between brightness and body, while plunger brewing creates a fuller mouthfeel.

Whole beans are recommended when a suitable grinder is available. Grinding immediately before brewing helps preserve aroma and allows the grind size to be matched precisely to the brewing method.

Why Tanzanian Coffee Can Be Difficult to Source

Premium Tanzanian coffee can be difficult to source consistently in Australia.

Export volumes are smaller than those of many larger coffee-producing countries, and the availability of high-quality lots can change considerably between seasons.

Climate, harvest conditions, local processing capacity and international demand can all affect supply. Even when Tanzanian coffee is available, not every lot will meet our standards for sweetness, cleanliness and flavour.

For this reason, we may offer only one carefully selected Tanzanian coffee at a time rather than filling the range with less suitable alternatives.

Award-Winning Tanzanian Coffee Experience

myCuppa has worked with Tanzanian coffee for more than 15 years.

During that time, we have sourced premium lots and achieved awards and medals with Tanzanian coffees in previous competitions.

That experience helps us assess which lots have the sweetness, density, balance and flavour required to perform well after roasting.

Our current selection reflects that same quality-first approach. We would rather offer one excellent Tanzanian coffee than several average examples.
