Mighty Capsules — A New Direction for Coffee Pods at myCuppa

Over the years, we’ve made a lot of coffee capsules.

A lot.

Our existing capsule range has always been built around the coffees and standards that customers already know from myCuppa, but this year we started thinking about whether there was room for something a little different.

Not simply another flavour added to the range.

Something specifically designed around what many capsule drinkers actually want from their coffee:

more body, more flavour, plenty of crema and a coffee that still tastes like coffee once milk is added.

That thinking became our new Mighty range.

Why Mighty?

Capsules present a unique challenge.

There is only a small amount of coffee inside each capsule, and the brewing process happens very quickly.

That means the coffee has to work particularly hard.

A blend that performs beautifully through a commercial espresso machine doesn't automatically produce the same result inside a capsule.

For Mighty, we deliberately approached the coffee differently.

Rather than trying to make the capsules behave like one of our existing blends, we developed coffees specifically around the capsule brewing format.

The objective was straightforward:

• plenty of body

• smooth texture

• good crema

• low perceived acidity

• enough flavour to work through milk

• but still balanced enough to enjoy black

Most importantly, we wanted them to remain enjoyable.

Strong doesn't have to mean harsh.

Bold doesn't have to mean bitter.

Mighty Moka

Mighty Moka was the first release.

We wanted something rich, creamy and satisfying, with plenty of body but without the aggressive bitterness sometimes associated with stronger capsule coffees.

The result is a blend based around Guatemala coffee, producing a smooth cup with gentle sweetness and chocolate-like characteristics.

It has enough weight to hold its own in a latte or flat white but, somewhat importantly for us, it also tastes very good as a straight espresso or long black.

That balance became one of the guiding principles for the entire Mighty range.

Mighty Sweet

Next came Mighty Sweet.

As the name suggests, this one was developed around sweetness and balance rather than simply increasing intensity.

Colombian coffee forms the foundation, giving it a rounded character with a rich, smooth body and a clean finish.

During development, the words we kept coming back to were:

smooth, rich, balanced and sweet.

Sometimes a product name almost chooses itself.

Mighty Sweet has become the softer and more approachable personality within the Mighty family while still retaining the fuller body we wanted from the range.

And Mighty Bold Is Coming

The third member of the family is Mighty Bold.

As you can probably guess, this one moves further towards depth, intensity and a more powerful coffee character.

We have been working with Sumatran coffee to create something fuller and darker in personality while still avoiding the burnt or excessively bitter character that can sometimes dominate high-intensity capsule coffee.

Bold is intended for people who want their coffee to announce itself — particularly in milk — while still tasting balanced.

It will complete the first stage of the Mighty range.

Why Not Just Make Everything Stronger?

Because strength by itself isn't particularly difficult.

Making coffee taste stronger can simply mean roasting it darker or pushing bitterness further.

That's not what we wanted.

Our challenge was to create more impact without sacrificing drinkability.

Body, sweetness, crema and flavour all contribute to the perception of strength.

The aim with Mighty has therefore been to build coffee that feels substantial in the cup without relying on burnt flavours to get there.

That takes considerably more experimentation than simply turning up the roast.

Designed for Everyday Coffee

We also wanted Mighty to remain uncomplicated.

These aren't capsules requiring special recipes or elaborate preparation.

They are designed for compatible original-line Nespresso machines and for the way people genuinely use capsule coffee at home and at work.

Put the capsule in.

Press the button.

Drink the coffee.

Sometimes that simplicity is exactly the point.

A Different Part of the myCuppa Range

Mighty isn't intended to replace our existing capsule coffees.

It gives us another direction.

For customers who enjoy our traditional coffees, those products remain exactly where they belong.

Mighty is for people looking for something with a little more weight, richness and presence.

It's also given us the opportunity to experiment with different coffees and blending approaches specifically for capsule extraction rather than simply adapting an existing espresso blend.

After 20 years of roasting, that still makes product development interesting.

There is always another combination to test, another roast adjustment to try and another cup to taste.

Some work.

Some definitely don't.

And occasionally you find something that makes you stop and think:

Yes. That's the one.

That's how Mighty began.
