Frequently Asked Questions

How fresh are myCuppa coffee beans?

Our coffee is roasted fresh in Melbourne, packed shortly afterwards and dispatched as quickly as possible.

On roasting days (Monday to Friday), we typically roast in the morning, pack around lunchtime and prepare orders for shipment that same afternoon. This significantly reduces the time between roasting and dispatch.

Do you roast coffee before receiving an order?

Yes, we have to because of the sheer scale of coffee shipped daily. We also change our roasting schedule live in real time during the day to accommodate new orders. It's a complex balancing act.

We roast daily, up to 25 batches rather than holding large quantities of finished coffee for extended periods.

This approach allows us to maintain a fresh supply across our blends, premium single origins and decaf coffees while still dispatching orders promptly.

Generally, more than 90% of coffee shipped each day were roasted earlier in the morning.

Is coffee best immediately after roasting?

Coffee can be too fresh to brew at its best immediately after roasting because it continues releasing carbon dioxide for several days.

Although we dispatch coffee very fresh, allowing it a short resting period can improve extraction, sweetness and consistency, particularly when using an espresso machine.

A delivery can take 1 day or 8 days depending upon the final destination, so it's important to always ship freshly roasted coffee.

How quickly is fresh coffee packed and shipped?

On a typical roasting day, coffee is roasted early in the morning, packed about 20 minutes after exiting the roaster and dispatched later that afternoon.

Orders placed after the daily shipping cut-off may be sent on the next available dispatch day, but our objective is always to minimise the time between roasting, packing and shipment.

How should I store freshly roasted coffee beans?

Keep the coffee sealed in its original bag and store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, heat and moisture.

Avoid storing coffee in the refrigerator, as condensation and surrounding odours can affect flavour. Only open the bag when required and reseal it promptly to reduce exposure to oxygen.

Fresh coffee should taste lively, aromatic and full of character—not flat, stale or tired from sitting in storage for months.

The myCuppa Fresh Coffee Beans collection includes our coffee blends, premium single origins and decaf coffees, all roasted fresh in Melbourne and available as whole beans or freshly ground to suit your preferred brewing method.

This collection does not include coffee capsules. It is focused on freshly roasted coffee for espresso machines, grinders, stovetop brewers, plungers, filter equipment and other traditional brewing methods.

Roasted in the Morning, Packed at Lunchtime and Shipped That Afternoon

Our approach to freshness is straightforward.

On roasting days (Monday - Friday), we roast coffee in the morning, pack it around lunchtime and prepare it for shipment that same afternoon.

This short turnaround helps reduce the time between roasting and dispatch, so customers receive coffee much closer to the date it was roasted.

Many larger coffee brands roast in bulk, hold finished stock in warehouses and distribute it through multiple storage and retail stages before it reaches the customer. Our process is more direct, allowing us to maintain much tighter control over roasting, packing and dispatch.

Why Freshly Roasted Coffee Beans Matter

Roasting creates hundreds of aromatic and flavour compounds that give coffee its sweetness, body, fragrance and complexity.

After roasting, coffee gradually changes as it releases carbon dioxide and is exposed to oxygen. Over time, the more delicate aromas fade and the coffee can become flatter and less expressive.

Freshly roasted coffee generally offers:

  • stronger aroma;
  • greater sweetness;
  • better body;
  • more distinct tasting notes;
  • improved crema and extraction potential;
  • a cleaner and more satisfying finish.

Freshness does not mean coffee must be brewed immediately after roasting, but it does mean the coffee has not spent unnecessary time sitting in storage before reaching you.

Can Coffee Be Too Fresh?

Yes. Coffee continues to release carbon dioxide after roasting, and it may be too active to brew consistently during the first few days.

Very fresh coffee can create unstable espresso extractions, excessive crema and uneven water flow through the coffee bed.

Allowing freshly roasted coffee a short resting period can improve sweetness, balance and extraction consistency. The ideal resting time depends on the coffee, roast profile and brewing method.

Espresso coffee often benefits from several days of rest, while some filter coffees may become expressive slightly earlier.

Because we dispatch our coffee very fresh, much of this natural resting process can occur while the order is in transit and during the first few days after delivery.

Fresh Coffee Blends

Our coffee blends are developed for balance, consistency and dependable performance.

They combine carefully selected coffees to create flavour profiles that may include chocolate, caramel, nuts, toffee, fruit sweetness and rich body.

We use quality single-origin coffees within our blends, including many of the same origins sold separately elsewhere in our store. Each component is selected to contribute something valuable to the final cup, such as body, sweetness, aroma, strength or a cleaner finish.

Freshly roasted blends are particularly well suited to espresso machines and milk-based drinks such as flat whites, lattes and cappuccinos.

Fresh Single Origin Coffee Beans

Single origin coffee allows the character of a particular country, region, estate or growing area to remain more visible.

Our premium single origins may offer smooth chocolate and caramel flavours, bright fruit, floral aromas, lively acidity or rich regional character depending on the coffee.

Freshness is especially important with single origin coffee because many of the more delicate aromas and distinctive flavour notes can fade as the coffee ages.

The range changes throughout the year according to harvest timing, crop quality and availability.

Freshly Roasted Decaf Coffee

Our Fresh Coffee Beans collection also includes water-processed decaf coffees.

Decaf coffee can still deliver sweetness, body and satisfying flavour when quality green coffee is used and the roast profile is handled carefully.

Our decafs are roasted fresh and available as whole beans or freshly ground. They are suitable for customers who want to reduce caffeine while still enjoying the flavour and aroma of freshly roasted coffee.

Whole Coffee Beans or Freshly Ground Coffee

Whole beans are generally the best option when you have a suitable grinder because grinding immediately before brewing helps preserve aroma and flavour.

If you do not have a grinder, we can prepare the coffee to suit your brewing equipment.

Available grind options may include:

  • espresso;
  • stovetop;
  • plunger;
  • filter;
  • AeroPress;
  • other selected brewing methods.

Choosing the correct grind size is important. Coffee that is too coarse may taste weak or under-extracted, while coffee that is too fine may restrict water flow and create bitterness.

Fresh Coffee for Espresso Machines

Freshly roasted coffee can perform exceptionally well in espresso machines, but small grinder adjustments may be required as the coffee rests.

As carbon dioxide levels change, extraction speed can also change. A grind setting that works well on one day may need a minor adjustment several days later.

Aim for an extraction that delivers good body, sweetness and balance rather than relying only on a fixed time or volume.

Fresh coffee can also produce more crema, although crema alone is not a measure of quality. Flavour remains the most important guide.

Fresh Coffee for Filter, Plunger and Stovetop Brewing

Fresh coffee beans can be used across a wide range of brewing methods.

Filter brewing can highlight aroma, clarity and delicate flavour notes, particularly with premium single origin coffees.

Plunger brewing generally produces a fuller-bodied cup, while stovetop brewers create a more concentrated style of coffee.

The ideal coffee, roast profile and grind size will depend on the brewing method and the flavours you enjoy.

How to Store Fresh Coffee Beans

Store coffee in its original sealed bag in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, heat and moisture.

Avoid keeping coffee near ovens, windows, kettles or other sources of heat and steam.

Refrigeration is generally unnecessary and can expose the coffee to condensation and surrounding food odours.

For best results:

  • keep the bag properly sealed;
  • minimise unnecessary exposure to air;
  • grind only what you need;
  • avoid transferring the coffee into a poorly sealed container;
  • use the coffee while its aroma and flavour remain vibrant.
