Coffee was first introduced by missionaries in 1898 and Kilimanjaro is home to Tanzania's oldest and first Cooperative union - Kilimanjaro Native Coffee Union, established in 1925.
The producers of this lot are small farmers, typically 1 - 2 hectares where the coffee trees are inter-crop with bananas and avocados and many farmers rely upon organic means to fertilize their coffee using animal manure and maize production.
This delightful coffee is fully washed and pulped on local, hand-made equipment and then dried on mats or raised beds where it is then finished at local mills for bagging and transport for export.
Tanzanian coffees produce delightful intensity in similar ways to Kenyan coffees, but without the searing acidity of the Kenyans.
Generally, Tanzanian coffees are graded by physical size with the largest being AA and the smaller sized coffees AB. Tanzania is also famous for it's peaberry (small, full, round beans almost like ball bearings).
AB grades are not inferior to AA, in fact, the smaller cherries can produce amazing intensity and complexity.
We enjoyed the balance of this cup, with dark berry flavors, chocolate, delicate tea-like notes and lovely citric acidity.

Acidity - balanced citric
Body - medium and juicy

A good, clean, sweet and rich flavored coffee that represents typical Tanzania AB qualities.
We loved the delightful citric acidity.
