Burundi Filter-Roast Coffee Beans

We are pleased to offer this quality Burundi Nyagashih washed specialty coffee prepared as a lighter, filter-style roast.

A coffee ideally suited for types of alternative brew methods and applications where lighter roasts are highly desired.

As a lighter roasted bean, it could be more suited to milk-based espresso (or dairy alternatives used in espresso) beverages. However, it will work espresso enthusiasts who drink black.

The body and finish of lighter roasted coffees may be deeper and more varied than traditional medium or espresso roasts.

Lighter roasted coffees, generally called "filter style," are not as "soluble" when used for espresso brewing.

Lighter roasts are more challenging to use in espresso situations.

However, suppose you use high-quality grinders and espresso machines and have the right skills and techniques to "dial in" the grind and dose.

In that case, espresso enthusiasts will generate the sweetest and most glorious extractions.

Like all filter-style espresso roasts, you must "work for it" in chasing that god shot.

Our Filter Roast is an ideal product for customers using any of the contemporary or alternative styles of brewing such as Aeropress, Syphon, Moccamaster, Pour Over (such as a V60), or Cold Drip.

It's a thoroughly washed coffee.

Hence, it will be a clean cup with delicate and sweet acids.

Sourcing the finest

We have been sourcing excellent coffees from the Akawa Project for many years.

This lot is from Nyagashiha washing station, located 86km south of Bujumbura's capital.

It is surrounded by steep valleys, with most of the land used by farmer/family communities that grow coffee, fruit, and vegetables.

Jean-Baptiste Bigirimana is the manager who oversees the 1172 farmers who produce roughly 400MT of exportable green coffee per harvest.

The region has a temperate year-round average of 18 degrees, which allows the cherries to develop slowly, creating greater complexity in the cup.

On top of these ideal conditions for growing coffee, Jean-Baptiste insists on rigorous double sorting of all lots that pass through the mill.

It is a coffee with incredible complexity, super-clean, and consistency in the cup.

Why a "Filter roast" is so different

When roasting coffee for filter style, the profile is gentle, particularly in the "drying" phase in the early stage of the roast.

The middle section of the roast is similar to a medium or espresso roast, particularly mallard.

However, it's around 1st crack that things take a different turn, and we prepare to exit the roast by carefully managing the heat and finish temp.

Filter-style roasts are lighter in shade (color) and will not have the same body as a medium or espresso roast.

In milk, a filter-style roast may lack flavors and finish. Acid levels are significantly higher, and some dairy alternatives may "react" adversely to these higher acids in the lighter roasted coffees.

If you add milk to your coffee, please consider one of our medium-roasted coffees, as they will perform better with dairy or dairy alternatives.

Burundi Filter Roast coffee is roasted on a specialized platform using a precise filter roast profile.

It ensures the coffee is developed sufficiently without being sour, woody, grassy, or herbal.

It will deliver a beautiful array of flavors and a delicate acid balance without excessive citric or malic astringency.

A beautiful, sweet, and clean Burundi specialty lot expertly roasted for filter style - tastes of sweet stone fruits and jam.

We love supporting the amazing group from the Akawa Project in Burundi.

This excellent fully washed lot is very clean and sweet, excellent for lighter roast applications.

When we prepare a filter roast coffee, the bean has been expertly developed during the roast profile without introducing roast notes. Ensuring the effective removal of sour, woody or grassy notes often found in lighter roasted coffees.

Filter coffee is the best way to enjoy the clarity and original characteristics developed by brewing the coffee with a clean extraction of the coffee oils.

Our Filter Roast is prepared on a specialized hand-roasted smaller platform - dedicated to precise filter roasting.

It will deliver a beautiful flavor having delicate acid balance without excessive citric or malic astringency.

Best filtered coffee roast so far

9 June 2023
I’ve been shopping here for 10 years, if not longer. I usually buy coffee for filter, and have stuck mostly to Ethiopians, and whatever “Filter Roast” specific coffees are offered here. Out of all the coffees I have purchased over the last 10 years, this Burundi is my favourite, and the very first coffee I have bothered to review! We mostly use an Aeropress because it’s easy, but will use a Hario V60 or Kalita Wave 185 for pourover on weekends. Anyway, keep up the great work.
