The Golden Bean 2013/14 coffee roasting event was held in early October 2013.
I had been flipping and flopping as to whether I really wanted to enter Golden Bean this year - in the lead up months to the event, I had been thinking at various moments about which of the almost 50 coffees we have in our portfolio to submit as entries.....decisions, decisions !
We have quite a few custom coffees prepared for specialty cafes and some of these have been absolute standout combinations.
Last year (2012/13) I had taken some big gambles (risks) with entries - quite left-field, super-fruity coffees that were well regarded by expert baristas in Melbourne, but may be too radical for a calibrated judge.
Last year's strategy bombed - although we did manage to pick up a Silver medal and a Bronze.
We only decided at the very last minute, with just 2hrs remaining on the clock before the last express post collection - a.k.a THE DEADLINE.
To be honest, I was not really happy with the rushed preparations but we collected two(2) Bronze medals in the highly contested Espresso and Single Origin Categories - given the circumstances quite happy with the result.
Our Espresso blend continues to be a consistent medal winner - this is now 4 years in a row our beloved Espresso has picked up awards - a sure sign of consistency.
Sumatra Lake Tawar picked up a medal in the Single Origin section - it continues to be a very popular coffee amongst our mycuppa clients.
The way in which the coffees are judged, there is 1 point difference between each of the Gold, Silver and Bronze medals - the standard is very high and in fact the difference between Gold and Bronze can be barely discernible.
