March 2011 - All about the King of Coffee, Ethiopia Yirgacheffe

Date Posted:1 March 2011

New season/crop Ethiopians now in the store.

We run about 2 or 3 different Yirgy's at any time - a combination of maybe two different washed Yirgacheffe and an exotic Natural to showcase in the Specialty Cafes.

Firstly, we have the wonderful Grade 1 washed.

Yirgacheffe GR1's are very rare and difficult to source as the majority of washed Yirgy's that come into Australia are Grade 2.

The GR1 washed is from Dumerso. If you are lucky enough to pick up this wonderful Yirgachaffe, you will discover the following:

Grown in the Zonegedlko District, this bean ships with GrainPro liners to preserve the quality.

In the cup, the Dumerso GR1 washed Ethiopia Yirgachaffe exhibits wweet and delicate notes of tea rose, apricots, honeyed and black tea moving to a smooth dark cocoa body and a sweet finish.

As a black, I get pineapple - which is truly enjoable. In milk I get a sweet, clean finish with hints of apricot.

Generally, Ethiopia Yirgachaffe beans display a very clean cup with dominant notes of honey and lemon - you won't be disappointed with the King Of Coffees - whether it is a GR1 or GR2 washed, they are superb.

As for the Natural (unwashed).

We sometimes use this in the Berry Apocalypse blend, other times we run it for Specialty Cafes.

The GR1 natural we have in our store is Aricha from Bennetts - a true specialty coffee.

Intense berry aromas and flavour up front followed by a bright, tangy berry acidity. Full creamy textured cup with with a strong, lingering bitter-sweet cocoa finish.

We prefer to use the Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Naturals as a black coffee - double ristretto, short-black, espresso. This showcases the intense fruity sweetness and wonderful balance of the Yirgacheffe bean.

Once you try this coffee you will be hooked.
