April 2012 - Costa Rica bakeoff time again

Date Posted:1 April 2012

Autumn 2012 marks the start of new season arrivals from Central America.

First up we have our Costa Rica bake-off with four(4) wonderful specialty coffees to evaluate - Miramonte, Jaguar, La Candelaria and the new season arrival of the Tarrazu DOTA.

Now that we have roasted and cupped these bean a few times, the standouts for me personally are the La Canderalia Estate microlot displaying wonderful apricot/apple acidity and the DOTA Tarrazu with it's honeyed base and peach notes.

Miramonte has a subtle flavor with surprisingly long bright apricot finish.

This bean really surprised us. Sourced from a single estate, unblended at the Co-ops, it reflects a pure, clean sparkling cup with amazing sweetness.

Produced at one of Central America's most sustainable processing mills, this coffee from the highly regarded Hacienda Miramonte is 100% Rainforest Alliance certified. Catuai varietal beans originating from West Valley, Naranjo.

Miramonte beans are wet processed and they are cultivated on the elevation of 1’000-1’200 above sea levels.

Miramonte has its real life history embedded in generations of families working in the coffee business.

Its history dates back to 1910 when Mrs Lucila Morales bought Hacienda Miramonte on the county of Heredia.

In this hacienda, the Gurdian Family (great, great grandsons of Mrs Luciala) produced and milled coffee for almost 90 years.

Jaguar beans are hulled from parchment that is 100% sundried in a greenhouse especially designed to cater to wet weather conditions, thus to ensure a better coffee quality.

Jaguar is an innovative brand designed by Jürgen Plate - a great coffee specialist and one of the coffee pioneers in the country.

His fluency in coffee blending, blend design, let to creation of ‘Jaguar,’ a name that commemorates Volcafe as a leading sponsor for the Jaguar Conservation Program in Costa Rica.

New season Tiger Mountain arrived in our store in early May 2012 and the new season Elk Hill arrived in late May.

I have to admit, the Elk Hill is without doubt our favourite bean at the moment - and our customers agree.

In 2013, the Tiger Mountain begain shipping from origin in Ecotec liners. These are similar to grainpro liners used by

other origins. The result of this recent quality initiative has been the increase in cup quality by a stagerring +3-4

points.

Tiger Mountain now pulls around 85 points - which is very respectable in any terms.

New season Tiger Moutain is arriving into the mycuppa store at the rate of at least 1x pallet (960kgs) per month.

We have upgraded our opinion of Tiger Mountain - it is superbly balanced, creamy and with that irrestible chocolate finish.
